Sea Ranching Initiative Launched off Vizhinjam Coast
Sea Ranching Initiative Launched off Vizhinjam Coast: Strengthening Marine Fishery Resources in Kerala
The Kerala State Fisheries Department has launched a significant sea ranching initiative off the Vizhinjam coast as a continuation of the artificial reef project, aimed at boosting marine fishery resources and fostering sustainable fishing practices. This ambitious project, inaugurated by Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian, marks a critical milestone under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
Key Details of the Sea Ranching Initiative:
First Batch Release: On November 13, 2024, 20,000 pompano (Trachinotus blochii) fingerlings were deposited approximately 1.5 nautical miles off the Vizhinjam coast. This initial release is part of a larger project designed to release a total of 10 lakh pompano and cobia (Motha) fingerlings across 10 locations along the Thiruvananthapuram coast.
Artificial Reef Modules: The fingerlings were released at the coordinates of pre-deposited artificial reef modules, installed to support the growth and development of marine species. These reefs, created with funding from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) under PMMSY, consist of over 150 modules in various shapes such as triangular, flower, and pipe-like structures. These artificial reefs act as habitats that naturally attract and protect fish species like tuna, trevally, and mackerel.
Scope of the PMMSY Scheme: The ₹3 crore Central funding through the PMMSY scheme supports Kerala’s goal to develop sustainable aquaculture practices and protect marine biodiversity. The initiative, with its first release from the Ayiramthengu fish farm, is managed by the Agency for Development of Aquaculture Kerala (ADAK), where the department reared the fingerlings to prepare for release.
Future Expansion Plans:
- Phase II: The Fisheries Department has proposed extending the artificial reef project beyond Thiruvananthapuram, aiming to cover 96 fishing villages in Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts at an estimated cost of ₹29.76 crore.
- Phase III: Further expansion is planned to include 96 northern coastal villages across Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts with a proposed budget of ₹25.82 crore.
Importance of Artificial Reefs and Sea Ranching:
Artificial reefs and sea ranching play a critical role in enhancing fish habitats, reducing overfishing in natural waters, and providing sustainable fishery resources for local communities. By establishing these artificial structures and controlled fish releases, Kerala’s Fisheries Department aims to bolster fish populations and stabilize marine ecosystems, ensuring both ecological balance and economic benefit for local fishermen.
This sea ranching initiative underscores the commitment of the Kerala government to innovative and sustainable fishery practices, leveraging artificial reef technology to enhance fish stocks while supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
