EOS-01 Satellite

EOS-01 – An Earth Observing Satellite.
Launched by ISRO in November 2020.

EOS-01 Satellite:

  • It is an Earth-observing satellite and shall play a crucial part in applications under agriculture, disaster management, and forestry support.
  • The EOS-01 satellite is ISRO’s first space mission during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The mission was estimated to take off in the beginning of 2020 but got delayed due to the pandemic situation across the globe, the mission got delayed.
  • The satellite is all set to be launched in ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C49).
  • It is the 51st mission of ISRO which will be launched in PSLV.
  • It is being launched with 9 other International Satellites which shall be launched as a part of a commercial agreement with the New Space India Limited (NSIL), Department of Space
  • The satellite is equipped with the best quality remote sensing technology.

What is Earth Observation Satellite (EOS)?

  • An EOS or remote sensing satellite is a satellite used or designed for Earth observation (EO) from orbit, including spy satellites and similar ones intended for non-military uses such as environmental monitoring, meteorology, cartography and others.
  • Starting with IRS-1A in 1988, ISRO has launched many operational remote sensing satellites.
  • Today, India has one of the largest constellations of remote sensing satellites in operation.
  • Currently, *thirteen* operational satellites are in Sun-synchronous orbit and *four* in Geostationary orbit.
  • The data from these satellites are used for several applications covering agriculture, water resources, urban planning, rural development, mineral prospecting, environment, forestry, ocean resources and disaster management.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle

  • India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is the third generation launch vehicle.
  • PSLV is the first launch vehicle which is equipped with liquid stages.
  • PSLV’s first successful launch was in October 1994.
  • PSLV was used for two of the most important missions. These are Chandrayaan-1 in 2008 and Mars Orbiter Spacecraft in 2013.
